Developing Reading Skills
The reading curriculum seems to continually change on a yearly basis - sometimes before the school year has ended. North Carolina switched from Standard Course of Study Objectives to Common Core Objectives in 2012 for all subject areas. When this transition happened, all subject areas increased in content area. Reading was no exception; the expectations increased substantially. North Carolina has implemented several programs in order to ensure that reading is taking a priority in the classrooms. The focus for the 2013-2014 school year at Endeavor Charter School ( where I am employed ) is to attend to the reading programs being taught in K-3 to ensure that they align with NC expectations. Rising 3rd graders will be benchmarked
this year by taking a Beginning Reading 3rd Grade EOG in the first 3 to 4 weeks of school. Our reading team at Endeavor has shifted our focus on how to provide effective reading instruction while providing key skills to assure that our students have a foundation to be successful when being assessed. We believe in not "teaching to the test". We want to engage our students in meaningful literacy skills which will hopefully create students who have a love for reading. Reading has been proven to be one of the academic areas that students demonstrate a large gap of skills. The common complaint teachers hear at Endeavor from parents is that they do not have enough resources to help aid with reading skills at home. I am hoping this website will be a place that parents, students, or colleagues/professionals can come to gain additional knowledge or resources for developing various reading skills.
